Our Story
How Blue Skye Was Born
How Blue Skye was born…
Skye is the name of my youngest child. She is my only daughter. The name Blue Skye was born from a love of midwifery, all my kids (including Skye!), an emphasis on focusing on the positive and little help from Carrie Sizer at the Health Nest :)
About Me
Laura Mackin, Registered Midwife
I first became interested in midwifery when I was pregnant with my first child in 2001. Everything about pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding fascinated me. I became a certified doula (DONA) in 2002 and began attending births and I fell in love! Over the next 8 years, I attended as many births as a doula as I possibly could, became a certified childbirth educator (CBE) and became a doula trainer for a volunteer organization in Winnipeg, MB. In that time, I also went on to have two more children of my own (with midwives of course!) prior to undertaking a bachelor’s degree in midwifery.
In 2014, I moved with my family from Winnipeg to Vernon and practiced at Born Naturally Midwifery for 6 years. I then spent 2021 working with the Mountain Midwifery Collective. I adore living in this lovely community and life has now called me back to practicing as a solo midwife. As result Blue Skye midwifery was born!
Working as a midwife over the years has deepened my love and commitment for providing evidenced based and family centered care. Ensuring that birthing families feel supported and understand their options, including out of hospital birth for low-risk women, are tenants of midwifery that are dear to my heart and that I strive to ensure remain part of my midwifery practice.
When I am not baby catching, I am usually hanging out with my kids, doing yoga or knitting.
